Isolated reports of collapsed oil filters have been examined and it has been observed that this phenomenon can only be recreated when engines are started and immediately operated at extremely high rpm and heavily loaded while the engine oil is still very cold. Due to the high viscosity of cold oil, it cannot flow through the oil filter at an adequate rate. The rpm related suction effect of the oil pump causes the collapse and ultimate destruction of the oil filter. In these cases, please refer to the pertinent passages in the "Riding Instructions - Starting" chapter in the Owner's Manual:
Note
Engine damage
High rpm with a cold engine negatively impacts the lifespan of the engine.
– Always warm the engine to operating temperature at low rpm.
